Is "Dances with Wolves" based on true events from Comanche history?

No, but it is interesting to note the differences between the Michael Blake novel and the Kevin Costner film.  In the book, John Dunbar becomes the member of a Comanche tribe, whereas in the film, he befriends the Sioux.  The reason for this change according to the producers, has to do with the film's famous "buffalo hunt" scene; the only buffalo ranch they could find was near a Lakota (Sioux) reservations, which would have made it difficult to coach the Native actors and extra in the Comanche language.
